Are Northern Ireland Elections mere Sectarian Head Counts?

As with the 2009 European Election in Northern Ireland, will the forthcoming West Minister Elections only serve to re-inforce the tribal divisions that form the core of the North's problems?

Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams Martin McGuinness, Irish Republicanism

Adams And McGuinness Asked to Resign

This a guest post from an Irish American blogger http://irishblog-irishblog.blogspot.com/ on Irish Republicanism as represented by the current Sinn Fein leadership in Northern Ireland.

A Chairde,

Many republicans, myself included, subscribed to the view of achieving a 32 county republic first and then developing a Socialist Republic later. It seemed at the time that we had not the luxury of time for a proper debate on socialism and it would create further possible divisions. With the benefit of hindsight this would now be recognized by most as a serious mistake, hindering the development of a truly accountable liberation leadership in the learning curve of struggle.

The primary part of British strategy always in Ireland and elsewhere has been, divide and conquer. Wheteher we like it or not, we must admit they have been extremely successful at it. We must try and unite as far as possible, still keeping basic principles of Republicanism and Socialism, because as we have witnessed over and over, united we stand, divided we fall.

One of the basic tenets of republicanism is equality, which is simply not possible under any form of monarchy, a system based on inherited privilege, hence McGuinness as an acting minister of the British monarchy in Ireland, is irrelevant to the future progressive development of Ireland. He is however along with most of his colleagues, another reminder, of the absence in developing a truly revolutionary political leadership with revolutionary policies in the course of a struggle. Both are equally important to the struggle itself, for two principal reasons. Developing proper leadership and policies for the success of any revolution in the interests of its ordinary citizens and working people.

Ruairi O'Bradaigh during the course of the struggle used to talk of a particularly Irish form of socialism, which the left in general never gave serious consideration and which hindered the development of truly revolutionary leadership colleagues, who were busy with the day to day immediacy of a guerrilla war with Britain, forgetting the true interests of ordinary people in Ireland during the course of struggle. Adams and McGuinnese now speak of a vague form of pink socialism which is frankly an embarrassment, to more than 30 years of struggle. It has not been properly developed and it is simply for populist purposes, in the pseudo politic of a corporate media driven illusion of democracy and the consumerism of immediate individual greed.

There are several indications however in the 21st century, that O'Bradaigh's Irish form of socialism may have been after all a correct analysis. After the recent collapse of the international money markets, it has become much clearer to more people that the pyramid of capitalism, as Marx explained, does have a point of in-built collapse. It is important that Irish Republicans recognize that it is not a question of choice but the inevitable progression of the greed of globalization. Like the many lessons of another failed republican leadership in our struggles of the past, it is important that the historical lessons of socialism elsewhere are honed and developed, so that we have a truly revolutionary leadership in place, at critical points in our history, to protect the interests of ordinary working people, to prevent further exploitation by colonialism, neo-colonialism or international banking in Ireland.

It is important that we recognize this as part of our development, that none of us has a monopoly on the solution, indeed that we in Ireland need to unite with other international movements of liberation. We must surrender our ego's in debate in a united search for solutions and in a spirit of comradely learning what are truly progressive solutions. We do not have the luxury of personal attacks or years of bickering and division, as a distraction from the goals of removing both colonialism and corporate fascism from Ireland. There is a balance between principled policies and sticking together to defeat our enemies. It is imperative for our success.

When McGuinness publicly referred to other long standing principled republicans and socialists as traitors, it was confirmation of his lack of leadership qualities at this critical times. We simply cannot afford the luxury of such wild public inflammatory statements from any quarter.

He should retire immediately before he does anymore damage to Ireland and its people. Adams publicly stated wishy/washy pink socialism for the promotion of career politicos, is a disaster for Ireland at this critical time. Again I would ask them both to retire immediately for the greater good, so that we can all try to wish them well without creating any further ill feeling or division.

I believe that the majority of those actually engaged in the struggle itself, as opposed to some recent political recruits for careerist purposes, at expense of the ordinary Irish people, would support my statement. I say this with the utmost respect for all principled republicans and socialists from whatever quarter, in the interests of a genuine united liberation movement of the people, for the people.

I present the following link as a basis for discussion on the way forward in Ireland.

Oh fer fecks sake. An "Irish-Republican-American" a real "Chucky" this is rich.

Whilst there may be some discontent and problems among republicans IN Ireland, we will sort it out as we always do, among ourselves. This american should focus on his own country that funds and supports the genocide of Palestinians and whose own country is filled with Israeli spies. sort your own country out, you have way more problems than we do mate.

And he's gonna come here and tell real Irish republicans about OUR country? Typical Americans, going around telling people in other countries what's wrong with them and how to "fix it" American style...rubbish

A Chairde,

All sane people want peace in Ireland as soon as possible. Martin McGuinness's provocative personal outbursts attacking former comrades and attacking a free press, betray contradicitons for a republican deputy first minister serving in a monarchy, that are simply unsustainable or have no justification in any political principle.

Gerry Adam's continuous ongoing, flip flop, pinky populist revision of basic republican and socialist ideologies, are to say the least unscientific and simply going nowhere fast. Again and again former comrades, pro-active activists, over and over again, for the umpteenth time, try to give them the benefit of the doubt but the increasingly urgent question is, why, why, why, still stands. These are not two stupid people, so, Why ?. What is the agenda they serve, outside our basic Republican, Socialist goals.

Personally for me the only possible, ethical answer that makes sense, is a set of morals outside basic republican and socialist doctrine called Roman Catholicism. Personally I do not believe it is tenable for a Republican and Socialist leadership to serve two masters, indeed to give any religion, primacy above the Republican, Socialist agenda, which overlap and it is an insult to the Protestan(dissident) origins of Republicanism in Ireland. Though I am not myself religious, there is a huge difference even within Catholicism, between the traditional Celtic Church and the often fascist Roman Church, particularly in Ireland, since the departure of Cardianal O'Fiach.. Over the last 40 years the Roman Church via the "Peace movement", before , during and after the hunger strike, have been incessant in their drive for peace at any price and attacking basic republican principles. Any of the thousands who attended Mass, within Britain's internment camps for Irish Republicans, can vouch that, "Peace be with You" had an addendum of "With Justice" that was critical for all Republican Prisoners of War.

That is the critical difference between Republican and non-Republican perspectives. That is the critical difference between Republican leadership and Catholic leadership. Yes we all want Peace but for Republicans, not at any price. Too many sacrifices have been made. There is no sound basis to develop a Republic, never mind an inclusive Socialist one. How is honest balanced debate possible when the Brits have already reneged on the platform promised to republicans to engage in honest debate with those who disagree. Republicanism is in dire need of a large dose of dissident Protestant realism which it formerly had to begin with but any dissident will tell you of huge resources the Brits now invest in censorship and promoting a false superficial dialogue as a substitute. No !, the Brits have broken the agreement already, too many times to list them all here.

A lot of the leading socialist activists within the movement were assassinated over the last 40 years by design and unfortunately cannot contribute to a now critical debate, on future progressive revolutionary leadership in Ireland. .The personal freedom allowed under traditional Celtic culture, has been usurped by power hungry Stalinist/Roman Catholic egomaniacs. There are many elements within the Irish Republican movement being "sanitized" by a theology of a violent fascist Judea-Christian based culture.

Surely as a revolutionary movement, being inclusive rather than exclusive should be of a high priority. Surely for the many places like Newry which had an 80% unemployment rate, Sinn Fein's first manifesto should have included the proposed final draft agreed, relevant to so many unemployed, before it was once again revised, edited, deleted, in an undemocratic manner privately, by elitists within the party. Surely the structures and comhairle's within the movement, set up under O'Bradaigh's watch, should have been supported and adhered to as per party disciplines, by Adam's and McGuinness during their struggle for dominance within the movement.

There are many lessons to be learned and activated within the movement at this critical time of building for the future based on past mistakes. I am simply pointing out here, just some of the many mistakes that have collectively been made, particularly over the last 40 years to learn from them. Was there any scientific approach, for the preparation of any activist to arm themselves with scientific Republican or socialist facts in the struggle. Was there any scientific preparation for the modern psychological interrogation techniques used increasingly during longer and longer isolated interrogation periods. Was there any education of young activists, on the damage cigarettes, drink and drugs do to weakening resistance movements, while under interrogation.

These are just some of the lessons and issues no successful leadership of any liberation movement can ignore any longer in Ireland. Recognizing equally within ourselves, both our strengths and weaknesses, with just a little humility and accepting where best to fit those skills and weaknesses within a broad INCLUSIVE movement that encourages self appraisal and honesty in a realist way. We are not all armed to be heroes, much as we would like to be.

Dis-affected unemployed youth, yes even anti-social youth, need to be engaged and LISTENED to in a constructive manner in this process, maybe we can learn something from them ?. Maybe their anger channeled constructively can be the movements greatest strengths

I realize full well this is both a critical and controversial commentary on the present leadership of the movement., I can also say that not many have made all of the mistakes that I have personally made in my lifetime. I am one of those people who only learns the hard slow way, nevertheless I have learned that EXPERIENCE is of the highest value in all of this and that not everyone has to be as foolish as me to be a successful part of a truly successful revolutionary movement in Ireland.

I believe its time for a change in leadership and that Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness should step down while still held in high esteem by a large part of the population. Its in the interests of unity, the movement and the future of Ireland. Their successors need to be carefully chosen, so that they are not replaced by gombeen careerists that profit from sacrifices the many continue to make.

I would like to conclude with a sincere apology to all those Republicans and Socialists who continue to make sacrifices and display discipline that I cannot match. I have been indisciplined, drank too much many years ago and failed to deliver on responsibilities I was given. With the benefit of hindsight and experience I can see clearly that I was unprepared and unarmed for the tough struggle revolution requires.

Nevertheless I do believe I have something to offer the movement and I am entitled to my opinions whether they are popular or not.. I do respect and accept that constructive criticism from my peers is essential for progress.
